Travelled by myself last week. No probs at all in that regard. Agree completely about being able to do what you want without compromise.
My advice is just to have a good look at where you are staying. Where I stayed was crap (you can see the Rama Beach post further down). Apart from their management and hygeine issues I found it was Japanese owned and attracted a lot of young Japanese and old Germans, not many English speakers. Language issues aside, I have not always found either of these nationalities to be the most friendly when it comes to talking with complete strangers. In my case in travelling alone again I will look for somewhere that promotes a lot of "repeat" Australian visitors.
