You can be over cautious .. yes there is a risk with going but there is always a risk everytime you leave your house. Go, have a great time and don't worry about what might or might not happen.
I'm going in August also, and went in July/August 2003. Even went to the opening night of the new Paddy's Bar, and although a little apprehensive had the best time.
