Personally, if I was travelling with my partner and wanted time alone with her then I would not ask the driver to join us. We are paying for a service and courtesy would be to offer some form of refreshment (a drink perhaps), be polite and respectful and tip well if given good service. You are certainly not discopurteous if you do not ask the driver to eat with you!
