Its a combination of the roads and the local drivers. Despite having ridden motorbikes for many years I wouldn't risk the Lovina road. As I mentioned we have seen several accidents along that road and you're safer with a good local driver. We have been using a balinese friend for many years that works out of the Bali Mndira Hotel. His name is "Sugi" (short for Wayan Sugiani). If you have an early start (say 7am) you can do most of the scenic and tourist spots along the way to and from Lovina. Last time Sugi took us on a different route up there from that returning - made it back to Kuta around 6pm. It went West after Bedugul, passing along the edge of two fantastic volcanic lakes to Mayong then down to Seririt then up the coast to Lovina and Singaraja then back. Sugi knows all the scenic spots and we lunched at the Hotel Aditya (right on the beach) in Lovina.
