The 3 digit code is a security device to protect the CC owner (as well as the company trying to get paid). It stops people just using fake CC details that used to be able to be picked up from the old fashioned imprints etc.
Now you can't just give the CC number - you need this code that's on the back and doesn't show up on imprints.
Most places online that accept CC as payment now ask for the 3 digit code as well.
