Have been to Bali twice - just returned a few weeks ago and from trial and erro I have found that I too travel with minimum clothes and buy what ever you need there. As for toiletries, last time I didn't take any apart from prescription medicines. We went to the supermarket down the bottom of Matahari dept store, as you can get everything you need there really cheaply. Both mackros and the M supermarket stock all the well known brands, so you will have no trouble finding good quality items. Did not go to mackros this last time, bear in mind that you have to join (which has a cost) so that you can buy there. Great place for buying in bulk if you are getting supplies for schools/orphanages or just taking stuff home. At the supermarket, we were buying Pantene shampoo/cond for 14,000 & 19,000 a bottle. Toothbrushes were about 30c aussie from memory. Could not believe the difference in prices from what we buy at home. The funniest thing was seeing brands that I had not heard of in years - Persil, Lifebouy etc. And when you get to the checkout they give you wrapped lollies as part of your small change!
Have a ball,
Heather
