Ubud is about 30 kilometres north of the airport and about a 40 minute drive if you don't stop to shop at the mecca called Sukawati on the way. It's a nice day visit from the south or if you want to stay there are wide selections available in both accommodations and eating establishments.
Ubud is touted as the 'Arts Centre' of Bali and if this is so then I guess it depends on what you expect from an Arts Centre. There are a number of galleries, large and small, from the well known Neka Museum, the Puri Lukisan collection of art objects and Antonio Blanco's home and fanciful museum/gallery to the small shops up and down Monkey Forest and Hanoman roads.
Ubud is more a historical/cultural centre to me, being close to the old temples, palaces and archaeological sites and the museum in and along the river valleys and ridges just a few kilometres to the east and north where Bali began before the current wave of tourism.
Go to http://www.filosbali.net/YehPelu.htm for some pictures of just one of the places that might arouse the children's curiosity (and yours too). If they need wearing out some time go to Gunung Kawi. They'll sleep well afterwards!
The link below will take you to lots of information about Ubud and the surrounding district if you give it plenty of time to load as its in the middle of a big file.
Ubud is not Kuta - yet, but its going that way and as Noosa Blue says (below) you should not delay.
