Buying gold doesn't mean you're getting a bargain. The Indonesians believe that bright gold means more wealth and most of the gold though 20-24 carat is relatively cheap and yes they do put a coating on it, this doesn't mean you don't necessarily know what you are getting but bear in mind that it is not easy to value in Australia. If you are looking at comparison a jeweller here worth anything will not value it, that is not to say say you haven't bought the real thing it's just that with the coating any hallmarks are not ditinguishable. The old rule applies, if you are happy with what you bought for the price you have paid - you have done well.
