we use our visa debit card, we put all our cash into the visa and draw out of the atms that are everywhere around kuta, legian etc. (the atms give out rupiah, so you dont have to change the money) we usually take around $1000 cash with us and change into rupiah in $200 lots (so we can easily work out how many rupiah we get)and keep the bulk of it in the hotel safety box, usually just carry $200 aud or 1mil rup around. havent had any problems so far, & never needed any us dollars.
