You should hear me try to speak German. Six months of high-school language learning has not really adequately prepared me for a trip to Europe, to say the least.
Luckily, you guys are a little more advanced in such things, so there will most likely be someone around who speaks English.
With the German I know now, a conversation would probably go like this:
Me: "Meine Harre ist Braun"
German dude: "Yes, I can see that."
Me: "Das ist eine Tisch"
GD: "Well, obviously."
Me: "Das ist eine Fenster."
GD: "Why are you telling me this?"
Me: "Ich liebe dich."
GD: "Piss off."
Me: "Ja, Ich bin eine Dumkopf. Auf Weinerschnitzel."
As you can see, I can't even remember the correct genders for nouns, and I've probably spelled some things incorrectly. In contrast, you provided a few hundreds words of perfectly cogent text, with better spelling and grammar than some of the posters here who think they speak English just because they live in an English-speaking country.
