I didn't really think about doing it until after the Bali bombing in 2002. People were on job sharing, if they even still had jobs at all. Now I leave a tip, or small gift, in all the poor countries that I go to.
I would ask around as to their salary first, as someone mentioned - you may be giving a whopper of a tip. Then again, you may want to do that, it's up to you.
If I meet the cleaner & find out he/she has kids, I often buy a small item for them - usually school supplies. Also, as someone mentioned, try to give it personally.
Another question would be if you should give it at the beginning or end of your stay? Some give it earlier to get better service, I give at the end.
