We stayed at Bali Mandira over the road from the Padma. It cost 9,000Rp. to taxi in air conditioning to Poppies II. We taxied to Poppies and Kuta although we did walk there one night, however in the day it's just too hot and taxis so cheap...why bother?
We walked to Melasti and Legian did the around the block thing heaps of times, through garlic lane etc. For me a taxi was great for anything else.
At night we walked to Zanzibar for tea up near Kumua Pantai and that was fine, it's just the heat. But if that doesn't affect you then go for it...
