Yep, I would definitely go for a pool view room on the top floor - I don't think left or right matters.
As for checkout, you've got nothing to lose by asking for a free one but personally I wouldn't pay for a late checkout.
We also had to leave for the airport about 3:30 to catch 6pm flight. In the morning we went into Kuta for breakfast & last minute shopping, coming back to hotel about 12 to shower and pack. We didn't actually checkout til about 1pm so push it as much as you can. Reception will call your room with a polite reminder if you stretch it too far!!
As Carlos said, there is a safe place to leave your luggage with the concierge from when you checkout til when you leave. (Although I didn't have to do this as we had family staying longer.)
Once we checked out, we walked next door for some lunch and drinks, then a few last dvds and cds at the shop over from green garden. When we got back to the hotel we was ready to go!
I was a bit worried about not being able to shower just before we left for the airport - I didn't want to be all sweaty for the trip home but it was fine - only 3 hr flight to perth.
