I think the 3000 metre figure is probably a little bit high, both up and down. The British have indeed had a close look at the quake site using a Royal Navy survey ship, HMS SCOTT, and have found a number of disturbances on the sea floor in the general area. Among these were the formation of a number of pressure ridges, up to 1600 metres high and a large associated trench along the fault line. Both of these were formed over an extended time period leading up to the actual quake. In addition, this event now ranks as equal fourth of all earthquakes since 1900.
No big deal really but it does put a more accurate perspective on what happened.
