I am a true believer in Darwin's theory of natural selection. It has worked wonders in the past and continues to do so.

1) If you already know how to drive a motorcycle in your country, getting an Int'l license is so easy and cheap. The price is about the same as getting stopped once around in the Kuta area, and this is without the hassle. If, as you say you want to do, is to get out of the area and travel throughout Bali, it wont be so easy, should you get stopped like around Karangasem. There, the police do not get so many chances to stop foreigners with no licenses, and the price will go much higher. Not withstanding being stuck with the overbearing cop, who will be delighted to have his opportunity to throw his weight around. You could be detained for a while...

2) If the reason you don't want to get an Int'l license is because you are not licensed to drive a motorcycle in your home country, then be my guest, do drive in Bali: there are too many people on this earth anyway...
