If you have a bad reaction to them, it's probably best to assume they'll be anywhere you are. There's a couple of things I do to avoid bites (and I hardly get any in Bali).

I always make sure I'm wearing a combination insect repellant/sunscreen during the day and the evening. Having the 2 in 1 makes it easier, I've found.

I buy some insect spray from the local supermarket on my first shopping trip. Usually only costs around Rp15,000-20,000 from memory. Then I spray the room an hour or so before I go to bed.

I also buy mossie coils. These are ridiculously cheap at the supermarkets. And I always keep one burning under the table on my balcony when I'm sitting there having drinks or reading or relaxing or whatever I'm doing.

Sounds like a lot, but it's really not much effort to stay bite-free.
