Airlines often have their economy class cabins set up into 4 or more or less booking classes. For example, Advertised special, Discounted economy, Full Fare economy etc. As you are on different class to your friend Im sure you would have paid differnt prices / a different deal.
Airlines only release a limited selcetion of dicsocounted tickets (which Is why many of you have trouble booking even a year in advance) and they obviously try to sell more full fare seats for more profit. However, As the time of the flight comes closer if there is full fare seas still remaining they will release some more discounted fares and try to sell these. If no luck with these that is when you see those really really cheap fares for $300 - $400 fares from perth etc.
Ever wondered why you are the first to check in but seem to be allocated a seat in the middle or back of the plane? This is because the Full Fare economy class are automatically reserved as far forward as possible. I am generally speaking here as there is some airlines that are exceptions.
Garuda call their cheap seats "N" class.
