I'm not keen on the whole Tuban area myself and think it's probably a bit far out of the way for older teenagers especially.
Kuta is right in among the action and close to everything. If you were wanting something a little quieter than that, but still walking distance to everything, then Legian might be worth looking at.
Then again, I don't have kids, so my thoughts might not mean alot, lol.
Mic's site is fantastic for checking out different hotels in different areas - has a lot of reports from people who've stayed in the hotels as well as photos. There's also info on what you'll find to do and where to eat etc in each area.
