I hadwhat I thought was going to be a similar experience but it worked out OK.
I was in the line (Sydney) when someone checked my passport etc. Then another woman came up and wanted to look at it. Asked me what I had so I again repeated it. She walked forward and said "meet me when you get to the front of the line". Oh oh -I thought. Not that I had anything. I was in a hurry as it was Monday morning and I had to go straight to work. She took me around all the lines to a seperate desk. and asked me to open my bag. She had a quick look and went Ok have a nice day. I couldn't believe it.
Anyway sorry that put a bad note on your holiday.
