Gee in 15 years the Kuta, Legian, Seminyak areas have grown into one big area. If you are into culture do not go there. Tjampuan is reasonably expensive and cut into a steep river valley, beautiful but with many steps and a bit away from Ubud centre. There are many cheaper better layed out hotels in Ubud (research btf). We are old and Sanur and Legian suit us, but I observe many people stay in the East (Amed - Candi Dasar) where you can get some of the "Real Bali" experience. Best of luck I am sure there will be a lot of advice coming.
