previous post that you would like a cottage with nice views for a very reasonable price. The only place I've stayed in Candi Dasa which approximates to that is Kubu Bali [plenty of websites]. That's a hotel with individual cottages spaced out going up the mountain. We had the very highest cottage for 6 nights last August. Spectacular views over Candi Dasa to the ocean. Cost us 380,000 per night after some hard bargaining, maybe a bit more than you want to pay.

We also had a few days at Resor Prima, just a few minutes walk down a narrow sealed road through the coconut and banana groves from the Tirtagangga end of Candi Dasa main street. This is not a cottage style hotel, but it's right on a nice white sand beach. Some views from some rooms. Asking price 150,000 for a clean, comfortable double room with aircon, fridge, TV and ensuite with H&C and western style toilet and including adequate breakfast.

I can recommend a good driver, Wayan Manek [Nick], ph 081 8353501. He operates from Puri Oka Cottages, right next to Resor Prima.

Two minutes walk from there is Warung Pini, owned by a very nice lady called Wayan. Prices very reasonable. This little area is like a quiet fishing village, separate to Candi Dasa.

Plenty of inexpensive warungs in Candi Dasa. Apart from Warung Pini, I usually eat at Warung Puspa, almost next to Kubu Bali.

If you feel like moving on, the Amed area is interesting, particularly the village of Lipah. A good drive is up the coast road to Amed past the Ujung Water Palace and back on the inland road past Tirtagangga and some great mountain and rice terrace scenery.

In the other direction is the traditional Bali Aga village of Tenganan and the ferry port of Padang Bai. Apart from the ferry jetty, Padang Bai is more like a Balinese fishing village from times past.
