Getting to Lombok

Ok, I know you can either fly or go by boat, flying the 3 of us could well be unaffordable for me, but I have a real problem with boats, ferrys. I don't get seasick but I have a pretty big fear of drowning.

So what I am asking is what type of boats do they use, is the trip really rough, is it safe, how long does it take.

To let you know how fearful I get, I was terrified on the Ferry that goes from Cronulla to Bundeena in NSW.
