Agree with addicted, if staying at Ramayana go the poolside cottages. They are set up with an adjoining door (which we didn't like as noisy neighbours may as well be in the same room as you) with another couple that would be ideal.
Totally different style of Hotel to Mercure. Mercure is modern and minimalistic, Ramayana much more traditional. Mercure right on beach, Ramayana walk through art arkets to beach, but both in great locations. Restaurant at Mercure on 3rd level overlooking beach does fantastic brekkie, being a member of the Accor chain you will find quite a few Japanese, but also German French etc. More Aussies at Ramayana I'd say.
You cannot beat getting up early and grabbing a roof top cabana and watching things unfold on the beach. Many a happy hour was spent up there by ourselves. If you do opt for Mercure strongly suggest you opt for the deluxe seaview, you're just about hanging over the surf!!
If we were given a choice we would go to the Mercure over the Ramayana but we liked both.
Hope this helps
Sue
