Staying in Toya Bungkah or Kedisan is OK. Personally, I find it more practical than on the ridge of the caldera. Just be warned that in this area "Cleanliness is next to...impossible."
It's frisky climbing up, in the dark, but not real cold. It takes about two hours to climb for a slow poke like me. The last 100 meters are pretty steep and sleppery, because of the scree.
A guide (required by the local organization, otherwise it wont be pleasant for you...) is Rp150,000 for TWO persons (as of 1 - 1/2 month ago), but w/o breakfast on the top (certainly NOT $50./pers., according to Yos77 posting: what a rip-off!).
