Bali has changed alot since then...the tiurist dollar has driven hard and fast.Though in reality, Bali is what you make it.If you are gentle to the hawkers etc...they are usually gentle in return.
If you want to experience great waves...they are still there, just more crowded. Looking for great scenery and cultural events, then travel a little further. It honestly is what you make it. There has been a lot of bad influences taken on by this island, but It has everything a holiday should be.
