I suggest he get;s his passport renewed, your letter of invitation needs to explain how long you have know each other, whether you say you are a couple or not does not seem to matter anymore.
You need proof of your income, pay slips etc, phone bills of your on going contact helps too. In your letter you say you are inviting him to visit & stay with you in Australis, explain you rent & how many rooms etc, that accom, meals, entertainment, transport etc will be supplied by yourself whilst he is in Australia..
The fact he has been to OZ before will benefit him, no matter who or where he stayed! As long as he left on time etc...
If he can get a letter from someone saying that he will return is good too.

The first time my hubby came out was for 1 month, as I was told then it would be easier to come out for longer if he had behaved etc the first time & so each following trip was 3 months...
Try for a 3 month visa as he has travelled to Oz before, if you don't get it, they may call or contact him or yourself & suggest that a 1 month visa will only be approved at this stage! Which is better than nothing!

On the DIMIA websit it has forms etchave a look at them (the short term holiday, sorry cannot recall the number of the form) It used to tell more about what to write in the letter!
Do you have any friends that also have met him that could also write to say whilst he is here & what you wil provide...

Best of luck, I know people that have been diven visa's within 24 hrs (us) & also other that for holidays have taken longer than a month...
Just be honest & make sure you have everything that the forms require to lodge it, or else it can drag out for ages!
