With the recent Tsunami the tides have been disrupted and alot of the rubbish washing up on the beach could come from all the stuff that has been taken away from the land in Banda Ache. We were in Kuta in September and the beach was fine. I went walking every morning and it was just a clean as the beaches in Adelaide.
A girl at the local supermarket just came back from Bali and said that the hotel staff were having to go out each morning and clear the thongs and clothes that were washing up on the beach with the high tides each night.
I guess you can't expect all that debree to go into the ocean without it turning up somewhere. After all messages in bottles have been known to turn up in some far away places many months after they have been sent on their way.
