- the Grand Bali Beach in Sanur, built with war reparation monies from the Japanese after WWII and is the monolithic block that caused the local ordinance which decrees no building on Bali may be taller than a palm tree. Back in those days, before two fires ripped through the shell, it was more 'Grand' than the sorry place we revisited a couple of years ago.
It was not the only hotel, I think that honour might belong to the Keke's of "Our Hotel In Bali' fame, or perhaps to one in Denpasar to which they refer in that book, but it certainly was the largest and was recommended as the only one in Bali that filtered it's water supply to a degree of cleanliness that allowed it to be drunk from the taps.
What strange things old memories recall.
