My girlfriend and I just got back from Bali last week and I have a story to tell about excess baggage. I have been to Bali the last five years and my friend it was her first time. Flying Garuda and about to leave Bali, and we both approached the check in desk at Garuda at the airport. I knew we were both a bit over and I thought I would run the gauntlet, so I approached the desk with a smile and engaged in conversation along the lines of having the best holiday and it is the prettiest country ( which is not far from the truth on both parts ). Anyway, the attendant ( male ) weighed our bags, mine was 27 kilos and my friends 28 kilos. Combined weight of 55 kilos and the limit was 40 kilos for both so we were 15 kilos over. The attendant stated that we were in fact 15 kilos over and that he would knock it down to 10 kilos over and that we had to pay $100 US for the excess baggage. I said to the attendant that I was a frequent traveller to Bali, always used Garuda, and asked if there was anything he could do about the excess weight problem, of my luggage that is. He started to type on his computer and I knew that we were getting through as he was organising our seats and our boarding passes were coming out. He handed me the boarding passes and said that he would let us go this time. PS Got burned with excess baggage two years ago and didn't argue the point and attended at the Garuda office and bargained a price for the excess baggage starting at $100 US and eventually got it down to $20 AUS. Food for thought. Linny.....
