For starters steer clear of Kuta and Legian as they dont sound like your kind of places. There are any number of places you could go, but maybe could you let us know what it is that you are looking to do in Bali.

When you say 'typical of resort towns' it makes it rather difficult as a good deal of the well known areas 'exist' [not literally] because of tourism.

For starters I would suggest that if you want to stay in a beach area you go to Sanur in the first instance when you arrive, which while it is most definitely a 'resort area' it is much more peaceful and subdued than Kuta / Legian / Seminyak.

If you search the archives there is a post by a well known forumite - Helen. The archive # is 200501 and has a link to the hotel she stays at in Sanur. It is called Bumi Ayu and may suit your needs. Either type in the number i have listed or helen and hit search. The title of the post is Bumi Ayu bungalows.

Another area of bali which may interest you is Ahmed. Again there is quite a good deal of information in the Archives.

hope this may be a starting point for you. Many people on the forum will give great advice but maybe give us a bit more info to help you out...cheers
