Our first was March '84 at what is now the Jayakarta. I decided to walk to Kuta by the "overland trail", other than the main road. Twisting dirt tracks lead eventually, after many strange sights, invites to soccer games, drinks of Arak and other delightful pusuits, to Poppies II. My most striking memory was when I met a pig!
On a narrow one-pig dirt track, was an old lady taking a large, belly-flopping-on-ground hog for a constitutional, on a piece of rope. Quite an imposing porker was she, docilely snoofling along with Granny; I stood aside, in the bushes pretending not to notice the pong
du porkaire, accompanied by a horde of flies. Granny was smiling, probably leading a year's meal money on the rope.
Ah Bali! You were, you are, you will be!
