Hahahaha yes, of course males can take a man-bag. Airlines generally let them get away with it without assuming he may always carry it. We always take our big toilet case, my hand bag, a back pack and our leather pack of tickets/passports etc.
Could it be the water upsetting your skin? Perhaps avoid the ocean?My sister in law copped a nasty rash from the beach over there.
Heat rash maybe? Maybe its a bite that sets it off? Maybe wear the sunscreen with DEET in it to cover up.
