I wish to just add that the letters I or Ni will infact indicate if the person is male or female (if you are no obviously seeing them knowing) say in a letter or business card etc, if it is a male person it would be I Gede (as in my husbands name, he is first born, I am known in the village as Ni Made as I am female & second born in my family) My nephew is called I Putu & our daughter (when in the village is known as) Ni Putu (Putu being first born) Also their actual name is what we would call the surname, my inlaws all have their first Balinese names as in Ni Ayu Yuli (Yuli being my sister in laws given name) So they found it very odd when we married & I took on my husbands last name which is actuially really the name that would explain which I Gede he is...
I hope that helps...
