Most people leave at crack of dawn for the dolphins, so what i do is leave about an hour later and the others have usually found them and usually have had their fill of watching and start to leave, so you end up with few boats and it stops being a chase.
Last time I went we saw very few early on but on our way back in to the beach with the two other remaining boats we were suddenly surrounded by literally hundreds, some rolling around playing with each other, while lots were spinning up into the air doing summersaults. We also noticed they couldn't care less of the boats as lots were shooting underneath our boat without a worry. As we were so few boats out there we got them to turn their engines off and wow so great listening to all the lovely noises of the dolphins.
Lots of other things to do in the area, like water falls (got to Munduk not touristy like Git Git), hot springs, cold spring, snorkeling, diving and trekking.
