Firstly, I will not argue nor debate to moral issues of Cock fights. Each to their own. I was with 3 mates in Bali and decided to venture out into Bali and seek something different. I spoke with a Local mate of mine (He wil remain Anon.) He took the four of us to Cock Fights. Their were located about one hour North east of UBUD. We were gathering in the Local atmosphere when one of the Boys suggest a Beer. None of the Local spoke good English. That did not seem to matter to the keen locals. They LOL at our very bad Indo. I saw a local kid - a boy about 7yr. He asked to practise his English with me. I gave him 50000 to find four bintangs and I would gladly teach him. He obliged with the ice cold beers. Had a wonderful afternoon. The local government run a betting game up there. All the Locals seem to play. They aren't real keen on the Govt. The boys showed us how to play and he placed some bets for us. After working out the game and how the maths/probability worked, the boys killed them. We clean out the Govt. out. Winning a sh*t load of RUp (about $1000 AUD between us). The locals were stoked. Apparently this was the 1st time the Govt. Had been clenaed out. We were all on the Bintang and the kid's father and Uncle joined us. They started on the Beers with us. They were getting half cut when the Kid's mother came down to see wot the locals must have been talking about. She was not very happy. We gave her a couple hundred thousand and she left the boys alone to drink. The kid was over the moon. We gave him a tip for each shout. All the other kids were envious. To cut a long story short, all had a great day. One of the best I've had in bali. Beer with the locals, a winning day on the punt. Got over the top of the Govt. But the best part was, Just before leaving I asked the kid how much money he had. He showed me 300000 he made in tips of us for the beer and bets. His father was so happy. His average wage back then was 200000 a month. The boys' 300000 was in all small notes. I took the money back off him and gave him 600000, all in 100000 and 50000. His eyes lit up. His father was crying. Yes it is noy quite like going to an orphanage, but it sure made us feel good. We visit the village each time in bali now - not for the cock fights but to talk about old times and visit a local restaurant up there. The locals love us and keep reminding me of the day we beat the govt. As I stated above,I will not argue about the cock fights. I just wanted to share a remarkable experience. I don't know if I give the story true justice, but it felt awesome to give some thing beack to the local community (even after winning from the Govt)..
