Take a 4-5 day package deal that way not only will you save hundreds of dollars off the standard airfare but you get the 1st 4-5 days accomodation thrown in for free.

From Sydney you can get airfares and 4 nights included at say Bounty/Barong from $739, then just book with your favourite hotel for the remainder of your stay.
We start off this way and stay at Bounty Hotel in Poppies Lane 2 right in the heart of the shopping and restaraunt district to get all the shopping over and done with in 4 days then off to our favourite (and quiet) Sanur Beach Hotel to relax a week before coming home.
