I've never found aircon essential in Ubud in the dry season and never been there in the wet. Room River 3 used to be fan cooled, but when we were there last August I found they had installed aircon. We had booked Agung in Australia as part of a package deal, but I had emailed them and told them I was coming and I would like River 3 as usual. When I found it was aircon, I assumed that they had done me a favour as a several times repeat client, but a travel agent who posts on this Forum has said that for 4 days or more, the Tjampuhan gives a free upgrade from Agung to Raja.
Two other points. If you want peace and quiet at night, don't get a room at road level, as the road outside is a long curving hill and you'll get some road noise. Down the gorge a bit you hear nothing but birds and frogs. Also, be sure to ask for a fridge and they'll generally find one from somewhere.
