what gets the headlines and what doesn't. I was staying in Candi Dasa in August 2003 when a ferry out from Padang Bai bound for Lombok went down with considerable loss of life. This happened in very deep water where it wasn't feasible to try to recover the bodies. To at least some extent the authorities probably didn't really know who was on the ferry, so I suppose some people just "went missing".
I did not have a fixed itinery for most of the 5 weeks I was in Bali, so my family in Australia would have no idea where I was. I phoned my eldest daughter in Perth, thinking they may be worried and they'd heard nothing about it.
