We use a very simple formula for free freight. The goods carried need to be 10 times the value of the freight charges, otherwise it's not a worthwhile exercise.
Unfortunately, goodwill doesn't earn very many extra ticket sales or tax benefits, and the airlines are in business to make money.
The airline that used to provide a huge amount of free transport for charitable gifts and donations-in-kind to Bali was Ansett and, unfortunately, goodwill didn't save them.
