You can take 1 litre into Bali. I have been invited to 'the little room' on a couple of occasions and it is no big deal if you have patience. Basically the customs officials are only there to 'help' you. You can receive this 'help' by coughing up a few dollars and keep your excess alcohol/ciggies (they know the exact value and therefore the price is always worth paying) or you can refuse and they will 'help' themselves to your excess - the choice is yours!
