It is so good, nice, rewarding amd heart-warming to put a soft toy in the hands of a toddler, in Bali, who has never had one before.
However, please consider.
For about AU$7.00, you can help a family survive, yes eat, for on month. The figures below are 3 years old, but still within 15% of being valid. For Visitors well off enough to do both, good luck and you will surely accumulate Karma of Grace, by your actions in bringing survival to a family as well as smiles to kids.
SEMBAKO.
Sembako is an acronym for Sembilan Bahan Makanan Pokok = Nine Basic Food-stuffs; these are what were parcelled up in a box and distributed to the needy for the 4 months post bomb, as per Dept of Health advice. This one month's survival rations was based on a nuclear family with two kids and delivered 30k of rice; families with 4 kids might need 40k etc. The whole lot, usually came within an estimate of RP500,000.
Rice, Sugar, Cooking oil or Margarine, Beef and Chicken meat, Eggs, Milk powder, Corn, Kerosene (Paraffin for cooking on stove, up there known as Minyak Tanah), iodised salt.
A simplified version comprises Rice, Sugar, Oil, Instant Noodles and Iodisied Salt.
Hope this helps both the Visitors' need for smiles as well as the need for mere survival among the poor in Bali.
Peter.
