Firstly remember to be friendly but firm with them. We have found that having a joke with them is a good ice breaker. Go for a 1/3 of the price and come up to 1/2 but also remember that things are still a good price over there and so you might be arguing over $1.00 that the seller might need far more than you. If you can afford to buy a hat for $15.00 and you know you are getting it a lot cheaper than at home, then is it really worth beating them down for an extra couple of dollars?
We are still going to the same stall (126) in the Art Markets that we have been going to since 1985. (Hi Nyomen) and our last trip, we didn't even bother to bargain with her because we knew she would do us a good deal and that she could do with the money.
Once you find a favourite seller, you will find that they will go out of their way to get you things in if you like them, like a certain brand of tshirt etc.
Anyway, don't be nervous. After the initial culture shock, (usually over by the end of the first day), you will be bargaining with the best of them. Have a fantastic holiday.
Regards
Maria
