To me, dining without entertainment is just eating. My ideal would be dinner and variety show, with a good versatile band and an adequately sized sprung dance floor. If any Perth people remember Peter Harries' Knight Klub in Como, or La Tenda in Vic Park [now blocks of home units], then you've got it. Burswood with the Village People and the Civic Theatre Restaurant with the Drifters were pretty good too, not to mention the drag shows at Charlotte's. Ah, those were the days!

Back to Bali. Probably nothing like that on offer. I celebrated [if that's the word] my 70th birthday last August at a pleasant warung in Amed, Wawa Wewe, where they had a sort of rock group. We sat at a table well placed to avoid passive smoke, in the company of a great Dutch couple who we'd met a couple of days before, when they'd invited us to join them on their hotel veranda for a drink. We ate grilled tuna, chips and salad, washed down with arak and Coke. Emiko and I are ballroom/Latin dancers and we got up to jive, not the best on a stone floor, but to us, better than just sitting there.

I'm sure some people would say, "You did WHAT for your birthday?" But we enjoyed it. We're all different, aren't we?
