Telstra or who ever her long distance calls are with for her home phone & check out how much it costs her to call Bali landline,Bali mobile or Aussie mobile in Bali.Aussie home phones can be on different types of plans.
Our home phone is on some special plan with Telstra that is costs us about $1.00 a minute if we phone a landline in Bali OR a Balinese mobile.
Kymbo is right when she says will be a lot more expensive overall if Mum phones daughter on a mobile daughter has with her (IF it is an Aussie one ) because both Mother & daughter will be paying for the call but daughter could always get a Bali Sim card & depending on the plan the Mum's home phone is on it may cost no more.
I'd suggest they both also sign up for MSN Messenger before the trip.We find it can be a good way of keeping in touch with family & friends when we go away.
It only costs 300 rupiah for daughter to send an SMS with a Bali Sim card & 25 cents for the Mum to send an SMS to Bali.I may be wrong but I think it would cost the daughter about $1 per minute if she phoned back to Australia with a Bali Sim Card.
Make sure the mobile the daughter takes with her is NOT a pre-paid mobile because it won't work with a Bali Sim Card.if this is all she has tell her to pick up a cheap Vodafone because they are NOT locked to any network unlike Optus & telstra prepaid phones.
Recently you have been able to get a phone through Vodafone for $39 with $30 credit that you can use when you get back to Australia. Thanks to Bopgirl telling us this before we left we ended up buying 2 of them!
