Perfect for a day-trip from Kl. If there's a bunch of you going, it might be cheaper to rent a minibus with a driver, but normal bus fares from KL-Melaka are 9RM (about AU$3) per adult on a comfortable, air-conditioned bus (2-2.5 hours). (Only bummer is that the bus terminal is a RM12 fare from the centre of town.)

The town itself has many great architectural/historical sites, all grouped together so you can see them in a few hours. The people are friendly and the food is great and cheap. Beer is cheap in Chinatown, too... about RM6 for a large Tiger.

Just beware any stairs that claim to lead to a pub. These are not pubs. They are retirement homes for elderly prostitutes (seriously -- no-one under fifty, many over sixty), which you only learn after about five minutes when your eyes adapt to the extremely dim light -- so dim I thought they were off. Ewwwww.
