as we get a couple of days there in May, for our first time there too.
Here are some suggestions from a friend who lives there:

The Islamic Arts Museum. Have been told it's THE museum to see. ( Malaysian Airlines site offer a 3 hr tour for a.u.$24, when in fact it costs a.u. $2.70 for entry and stay as long as you like)
The Lakes Park - has places like the butterfly park, deer park and orchid gardens in vicinity.
Masjid Jamek is said to be the most beautiful mosque in KL. Non Muslems can go to most mosques when it isn't prayer time. Arms/legs covered, wear a scarf or some mosques supply one.
Royal Selangor pewter factory. Can take a quick class and make own pewter bowl.
Central Market, Chinatown and Little India.
Also cannot wait to see the wonderful looking old railway station.
