Bali - another 1st timer

Can anyone give me some advice on the Legian area.
We are interested at staying in either the Padma or Niksoma hotels.
Is there much to do around there.....I heard that the beaches are not safe to swim at.What about at nite...any good restaraunts ppl can recommend near by.
