Seats are released 12 months ahead. As mentioned ringing is better because not all seats are on the net (Australia for example).
As the flight gets closer new seats are released if it looks like the flight will not be filled. I booked Easter school holidays about 6 weeks before. Then I booked another seat for my son 5 weeks before departure. (approx- can't remember exactly).
I wouldn't have thought to try that late but someone on the net said they had just got seats so I tried. That was from Sydney by the way.
