I know that is something we always ask when booking because we usually travel that time of year. Christmas is often the same. Many brochures show it in the extra conditions down the bottom.
When booking Bali for January I asked one travel agent to avoid any hotels with compulsory "banquets" but she said she had never heard of it (mind you she didn't know much else either) but the agent I ended up going through said it was still quite common.
That price sounds huge though, most of the one I have seen were around $60AUD
Dont know how you can get out of it without changing your accomm. There are plenty that dont have them, you would just have to get the agent to find them.
