We were there just over night a couple of years ago and I am sorry to say that it was the only city in Java that we did not love. It just didnt have a good feeling to it - kind of an 'edge'? Things seemed a bit dicey at night?
It is a really large city but I preferred Jakarta. Like I said, we only stayed one night - because of not liking it - so I cant really help you any more than that.
Pretty easy to get to- we got a bus from Bondowoso/Probolingo. Nice big air conditioned bus arrived on time.
Forgive me if I am wrong but I did hear that it is one of the most militant cities in Java: they had a couple of firebombings of western style nightclub/bars a few weeks before we got there.
Hope others can contradict me
